Katrina Cottages
Is this not the cutest cottage you have ever seen? Lowes has partnered with Cusato Cottages as the exclusive retailer for the plans and supplies to build the "Katrina Cottage"
A “Katrina Cottage” is a wonderful alternative to the FEMA trailer. It is small permanent house, which is safe, affordable and can be assembled quickly. Architect and planner Andres Duany developed the concept for the Katrina Cottage just after Hurricane Katrina in response to the overwhelming need for emergency housing along the Gulf Coast. There are floor plans ranging in size from 308 square feet to 936 square feet. While you may consider this to be small they are designed in such a way that they can be added onto at a later date.
Not counting the foundation and HVAC these cottages can be purchased as a kit from Lowes for $45-$55 per square foot. This includes all materials to build including the appliances. Buyers can also elect to purchase the blueprints only.
These cottages are becoming so popular that other areas of the country want them. Many areas have lots that are too small for a larger home and these would be perfect. Many people who are interested in downsizing are clammering for them. There has even been request from people to use them as playhouses for their children! The best thing is that it’s affordable housing for people who can only afford a small condo, trailer or those find themselves priced out of their market and are forced to rent. It’s a win-win situation for all concerned. I love it!!
